Pennsylvania Ranked 3rd Worst State for Speed-Related Fatalities
Maybe you’ve been there before. You’re driving on I-95 when all of a sudden there are glaring headlights zooming closer to your bumper. You aren’t going fast enough for the person behind you, so they cut to the right and zoom past you. Perhaps you’re even on the other side of this scene, weaving in and out of traffic lanes on major PA highways, driving extremely fast in an effort to get where you’re going faster.
No matter what role you play in this situation, the truth that surrounds poor driving in the United States is both serious and sobering.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) publishes information each year that categorizes fatal car crashes in the U.S. by what caused them. These rankings are based on factors like failure to obey traffic laws, drunk driving, speeding, and careless driving.
Pennsylvania drivers ranked 3rd worst in the country for fatal accidents caused by speeding drivers. 509 lives were lost in 2016 due to speeding accidents. These statistics paint a picture of the dangerous and deadly ways people are driving in Pennsylvania.
Here’s how Pennsylvania drivers measured up in other categories during 2016:
- Pennsylvania ranked 31st on the list of Worst Drivers By State for accidents caused by a Failure to Obey. 25 fatal accidents occurred as a result of ignoring traffic safety signals; 19 fatal accidents were a result of not wearing a seat belt; 40 fatal accidents involved a driver driving without a valid license.
- Pennsylvania ranked 43rd in the country for fatal accidents caused by Drunk Driving. 345 of those fatal accidents were caused by drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher.
- Careless driving took 180 lives in 2016 as a result of Careless Driving, putting Pennsylvania in 25th place on the list of Worst Drivers by State in this category.
Overall, PA’s total ranking decreased, leaving us in 19th place on the list of worst drivers in the U.S. While a decrease is a positive thing, lives were lost due to reckless driving. Learn more about these statistics by visiting CarInsuranceComparison.com.
